.htaccess.backup

Where did it come from and do I need it?

I was editing my .htaccess file when I noticed an .htaccess.backup file. I do not remember ever seeing this file before, although, it might have been there all along.

Do I need this file, should I have this file and is this file automatically generated. What is its function other than storing a copy of an .htaccess file?

Did you notice the back up on your computer or on the server?

I use Note Tab to edit such files and have it set to create a back up of the old version of every file I edit.

Make a mistake and break something and it's just a matter of renaming the back up to the original file name and your back in business.

I often keep old versions of .htaccess files for future reference.

They get named like:

htaccess.domainname.2005.05.05.txt
htaccess.domainname.2006.10.16.txt

You never know when you'll need to refer to an old version again.
