.htaccess file disappears after directory refresh? ;-(

Hi all ...

I friend asked me if i could install a cgi script onhis webserver .. sure i said ..

i have installed scripts before no problem i thought..

myself i have unix apache ...

his server is unix apache red hat

all files seams to be working eccept one script that requires a .htaccess file.. and as soon i upload the htaccess and i do with the ftp client refresh directory the .htaccess file is gone ;-( is it hiddenor reallty gone?

the script contains path to the .htaccess but he can not read it as well

is this normal for linux redhat ..
can i not use files named .htaccess?
or should i rename them?

The ftp client grabs the directory listing by performing a standard directory listing (ls) and displaying the results. Some clients appear to request it as 'ls -l', others as 'ls -al'. In the first case, as it would appear your client works, it doesn't get to see any entries that begin with a period. The file is on the server, you just don't get to see the entry.

Most FTP programs allow you to specify the options used to do the directory lookup. Adding the -la option will make your .htaccess file show up.

Yes but the script i have installed needs tocomunicate with the .htaccess but if its noty visable it can not read it as well...

i got myself a unix apache server and then my ftp client can see .htaccess files.

but on this linux red het server the .htaccess file get invisab;le as soon i refresh folder... the script csan write to it but can not read the .htaccess file wird is it ;-( im stuck here...

i check ftp options it has option to hidden or show file names that start with a priod ..

i gue si just not allowed onthat serverto see them ..
it makes no chnages if i turn on off that option ...

I have the same problem. I know my .htaccess file is on the server because my custom 404 is working.

However, I can't see the file, alter the file, or delete the file. I use Cute FTP and see no option to show hidden files or files that start with a period or any of that. I know I used to be able to see it but don't know at what point it disappeared since I had no need to alter until now.

My web host is zero help since he gives me free space and bandwidth on his server but doesn't provide any type of support.

Do I just need to go download another FTP program or have my permissions on the server gotten screwed up somehow?

Okay, I found out how to make CuteFTP view hidden files over at their support website. It was not anything I'd have ever figured out on my own.

But know whenever I log on to the server via CuteFTP instead of being presented with a list of just my own sites and files I am greeted with a list of every site on the server and have to hunt for my own. This just doesn't seem right either.
