.htaccess works with netscape but not IE

i have the .htaccess setup to show a custom error page but it only shows up properly on Netscape.
On IE it displays the default IE 404 error page.

here is the contents of the .htaccess file

ErrorDocument 404 /404.html

.htacess is not browser-dependent, since it's executed soley on the server.

IE does it's users a "favor" by displaying a "Friendly" error page if the site's error page is short. Try making your custom error page longer and see if that helps.

Also, this may depend upon the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" setting in Internet Options-Advanced.

If you make your custom error page long enough, I believe it will override the setting.

i have the problem resolved. Turns out the custom error page was too short and IE was overridding it with its own page. I just lengthened the content and it worked out fine. Thanks again.

Research shows that short error pages use an insufficient amount of bandwidth, memory, and CPU power - hence the MS penalty. :)
