what proportion of web hosts allow .htaccess use?

Am interested in this - I want to do something in htaccess. But it can be done other ways - client side for instance. But dont want to go to all the trouble of getting the htaccess set up - then have trouble finding a web host. With web hosts that do offer it - do they tend to be more expensive? Is there a price premium as it were for use of htaccess?

As you can tell from the posts in this forum, .htaccess issues cause a lot of "support" requests. For that reason, you are more likely to find .htaccess use allowed on the more expensive hosting packages. I'd guess that the majority of hosting packages at less than $5.00 per month won't provide it. The majority of packages above $15.00 per month probably do.

You get what you pay for, in terms of priveleges, installed modules and software, and support... er... competent support.

Pick a reasonable number of candidate hosts based on services, features, security, bandwidth, power and network redundancy, support, and price. Then call them on the phone and ask about .htaccess.
