Apache Server not working

I am really confused here. I have installed the Apache Server and everything appears to be running fine on my end. When I open an explorer window and type in the domain name, everything comes up just fine.

But whenever anyone not connected to this computer tries to use the domain name, they cannot access the server.

I have turned off my firewall, as well as the windows firewall, but that does not help at all.

I am open to any suggestions here. I am just getting into the server side of this, so I may need some clarification of things, please bear with me :)

tpatterson,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Where is your domain DNS server? -- Where is the computer that translates your domain name to the IP address of your computer?

Please tell us what you have configured and what you have checked to eliminate a lot of wild guessing.

OK, not too sure of most of this, but I will tell you what I know.

The domain is hosted with <snip>. I have set the pointing to my IP address of 66.***.136.9.

I am running Windows XP and am connected via Cable Modem to a dedicated IP address.

I installed the Apache Server per the "automatic settings" and made no changes to the configuration files.

The domain name is <snip>

I am not sure what else I can tell you. The icon in the lower right hand corner indicates "Running all Apache Services". When I open the running services it says that Apache is started, automatic, Local System.

I have tried reading the documentation and am really confused. As I mentioned earlier this is a brand new area for me and I have no idea what I am really doing.

My intent behind all of this was to host our website in-house on the Apache Server.

Ask your "outside friend" to try to get to the site using its IP address instead of the domain name, i.e. put http://66.999.136.9/some_valid_page_name.html in the address bar and see if that works. If it does work, you have a DNS problem (it can take several days for a DNS change to propagate Web-wide, too, by the way).

If access-by-IP does not work, then have your friend 'ping' the server both by domain and by IP. Ping is available as an MS-DOS command on Windows and via shell in *nix systems. If ping doesn't work, then you have a connection problem -- Ping cannot connect to your machine. If ping does work, then you have an Apache problem.

They have tried the "Ping" but not sure if they did it correctly or not. So I am not sure of the response.

If you could try this, the IP address is 66.***.136.9 and the domain name is <snip>

Thanks.
