If not I might as well get LINUX

Is there a reasonable GUI (free) that can help me set up an Apache Server? Right now I'm mucking about with ASP.NET and IIS but I'd like to have a go at PHP with Apache and MySQL

I've tried setting up Apache, MySQL and PHP by going into the .conf files but anytime I get instructions from the net they mostly concentrate on the linux version with not much thought for the windows efforts. Is this because windows crashes too much and no-one in their right mind would choose that over the more stable linux versions?

I would urge you to get to grips with the httpd.conf file. If you use the above it really messes up the standard layout of the httpd.conf file. Meaning if you ever go back to manual editing you will spend lots of your life looking for containers etc.

Consider a windows based apache install to play.
