My site is on a Windows 2000 dedicated server and, having recently been able to get my access logs, I have seen a lot of 404 errors (5,295 since February 1 - just looking at raw numbers, my boss didn't like that!). I totally renovated my client's site last August - same domain name, totally new content.
My two major culprits (is that a good word?) that are looking for pages that have been gone since August 2002 are:
GET /c20.htm - 404 Mozilla/5.0+(Slurp/cat;+slurp@inktomi.com;+http://www.inktomi.com/slurp.html)
s5.htm - 404 Mozilla/2.0+(compatible;+Ask+Jeeves/Teoma)
I've been advised that I need to do a 301 redirect (for stupid .bots) via an .htaccess file. Do I have one with W2K and, if I do, where would I begin to look for it? I have very limited administrator rights, so even a vague direction about where to go with this would be appreciated. Or if there is another solution for Windows, I'd appreciate some insight into that also.

I run W2K with IIS and can't run it here (unless I just haven't figured it out....) The same type of functionality can be found in the Internet Services Manager plug in on the properties of the site.
If you can't get to those, you might have to beg your host provider to do it for you.
Someone else should know more about it, though there are only a few Windows hosters here.
I was afraid you were going to say I'd have to beg my web host (it's not them, it's the adminstrator for the dedicated server that I have to beg - big bucks and not much knowledge but that's what I have to deal with).
So, might there be a forum for us Windows hosted hostages here, or are we pretty much on our own?
