Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]!
I'm not up on Solaris, but if you've got Apache server installed with a basic configuration, all you really need to do is to define the root directory of your 'browsable' directories as the Document Root for Apache, configure a few settings to allow a 'directory view', check your file permissions, and that's about it. I'd guess you'll spend ten times longer on security concerns than in getting the basic server set up.
From a high-level view, all that needs to be done is to associate a base URL (Web view) with your browsable directory structure (Solaris view).
