Does anyone know much about Search Hippo, I have done a quick site search and this has been discussed a couple of times.

However couple of interesting points, they have an adword scheme that is currently free to list on and looking at Alexa web traffic(how much can we read into this) they seem to be increasing there amount of visitors.

Anyone get any referrals?

I've seen the site and even submitted. Took forever to be indexed and not one referral in at least a year's time. Possibly a different market would see better results?

I think they have changed the way they submit now - if you try to submit you can only get their adwords type of service - I could not find how to submit to the normal SERPS.

I submitted to this system called Searchapottomouses' Links and it was up within 24 hours.

I get occasional hits from the engine. The owner is a member here. Maybe he'll jump in and update us.

I get some traffic from SearchHippo to several sites, both from SH SERP's proper and through their XML results.

There seem to be two levels of listings: sites start out showing in Adwords-like boxes on the side - only at the SH site.

Maybe linking back helps but some sites get spidered. This puts you in the main index - the one that also gets exported to other sites via XML. The spider only seems to index the index.html page. Hippo respiders too. I get traffic on 3 different sites -- not huge but it's there. No complaints.

I've gotten a few clicks on from people who can't spell :) Other than that, nothing really to report.

the 'searchapottomouses' links are indeed free and this database is updated nightly. These listings have pretty small distribution and they are not syndicated.

Every couple of months, I will dump the database of people who are in the free section *and* activated their account (you only appear after email validation). Then you get into the syndicated feed which has a lot of distribution, although since this is coming out of the spider, you might not come up under the keywords/description you entered.

I did put up a page some time ago with excrutiating detail on how the engine works behind the scenes. Click the 'about' page then click the link for 'search engine optimization'

SearchHippo was the first search engine to "give higher rank" to sites which link to it. It is slight but enough to be exciting in itself. Additionally, people using the toolbar and the places they surf give small bumps.

anything else?

Because search hippo alow anyone with a site to use their free xml feed is is very possible that we are all getting a quite a bit of traffic from them, but simply not seeing search hippo in the refferal.

I think anybody that is interested in getting a bigger piece of the market SE wise definitely has their eyes and ears on this place. :)

Thanks for stopping by again, Kevin.

I would like to see Searchhippo search tools for other browsers besides IE. Sort of like ATW recently added. (Example being able to add SH to the address bar search on Mozilla on all platforms, or a button.)

Plus anything else for the Mac, hopefully they will allow different search plugins for the Safari browser, etc.
