DuckDuckGo wants U.S. users to get a choice screen for search engines, instead of the default on Android smartphones of Google.
Users in Europe already get a choice screen. [blog.google...]
Although, it's an auction to be listed as a choice. [webmasterworld.com...]

“If designed properly we think [preference menus] are a quick and effective key piece in the puzzle for a good remedy,” Weinberg tells TechCrunch. “And that’s because it finally enables people to change the search defaults across the entire device which has been difficult in the past… It’s at a point, during device set-up, where you can promote the users to take a moment to think about whether they want to try out an alternative search engine.”

Engine, when Google pays Billions to Apple to be the Search Engine of Choice. Getting them to give up that income will be more difficult. So it is the Manufactures that you have to content with. I think this will be very difficult to get all phone makers to comply with.

Perfect World? User would be smart enough to make their own decisions.

Sadly this is not a Perfect World ... and some will leverage market share to keep others out, and those that are out will make a noise.

Will be interesting to see if DDG can lobby change in USA markets.
