Farewell Excite DB!

Another Overture Clone.

I'm getting pure Overture results on Excite.com ie. paid Overture with Inktomi backup results - 20 per page. Don't know if this is instead of DogPile or a stop gap. But sad to see another DB bite the dust - especially when it took so long and was so hard to get into :(

Have you tried searching just the Excite directory?

It looks like it's going to be using ODP data.

Yes - they have DogPile for the metasearch option, Overture for default search and Directory appears to about to become ODP. I thought they were going to keep using L$ - but maybe not. Only L$ featured listings seem to appear in DogPile.

The surprising move is dumping Looksmart. I was under the impression Looksmart was paying Excite to be there.

Excite used to be the default home page for cable ISP providers. Last night while visiting, I noticed that the default page was the "corporate"(Rogers Cable, in my area) home page. It will be interesting to find out if this does change and whether all cable internet providers will use the same SE.

If cable users start using the "search" feature in IE we all know what the default is.

excite.co.jp has a flash splash Nike ad, then redirects to the main site, which is still using Looksmart directory listings, and what looks its own index, not inktomi (which is used by a competitor, goo.ne.jp).

Okay, I don't know about you guys but I'm getting a redirect when I do a search on Excite's main search. Most users won't bother fiddling with the other button's so the default is overture. DAMN!

Heavy sigh ... guess I'll have to manage without the five referrals per month I used to get from Excite. I wonder how long it will take until people realize that the "NEW" database is just overture in diguise. (Paid listings are not identified as such). Pretty cheesey if you ask me. Who's zoomin who?

Using GoTo is their prerogative... even though as a business decision will prove as disasterous for Excite as it has for others in the past.

What is TOTALLY out of order is the deceit, pretending that the results are based on relevance and are not simply adverts. I for one would never do business with cowboys like that.

As for their objective: "Restore Excite to its former glory"... laughable flannel.

Original Excite results still showing on Excite UK (underneath Overture UK paid results - no Inktomi). L$ UK results still in directory. A rave from the grave?

I happen to be friends with the Excite Chat manager. She is awed at how badly things have been transferred between @Home and iWon, as far the data-base is concerned.

Her, and anyone else whose work involved the chat server, will be out of a job on Dec 31st. The senior chat tech Tom Lang decided to start up his own chat server at halsoft.com because the inside word is that iWon will not run Ubique's Virtual Places platform.

Excite returning to its previous glory? I seriously doubt it, and believe it will be nothing more than an ad-spamming Iwon clone.

Fathom, I just heard yesterday that contracts for remote community management people at AOL were cancelled. People there for years got an email and have had contracts terminated. It seems to be across the board.

What's left in the U.S. that actually includes sites, updates and sends more than a sprinkling of traffic? I've had high hopes for FAST, but from where I sit all there is is MSN, AOL and Google. Which translates into Ink and Google, and Ink takes paying.
