After reading an article on submitting to excite (http://www.laisha.com/excite.html) I noticed that they say Excite uses the <description> tag to dictate what the description will be on their pages. Is this true? And if so, where should this tag be placed? Within <head>? Please let me know. Thanks.

goes in your <head> tags in the following format:

meta name="description" content="blah, blah, etc."

Shawn you might want to get a copy of Web Position Gold and follow what it says as a guide until you get a really good grip on things. If you listen to what it tells you and follow the advice gained here, your learning curve in seo will be shortened considerably

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I am not ready to purchase more software at the current time. In response to the message written before yours, I thought that they were meaning a <description> tag, not a description meta tag as in <meta name="description" content="blahblah"> ... Thank you for the response though.

Regards,

Shawn

I pretty sure they mean a meta description tag... I've never heard of a just plain old <description> taq...

SCBerg,

They are talking about the meta name=description tag. Our site is currently listed in Excite and the description is what I put in the meta description tag.

Just curious, how long did it take you to get listed on eXcite? -Shawn

No kidding... I've submitted to them a bunch of times and STILL haven't gotten in after almost 5 months.

The real burn is that we paid for a Looksmart listing almost a month ago, and Excite hasn't even updated their Looksmart directory listings since then...

I'm sure that site-owner is just an overworked and tired person who typed that in wrong months and months ago and never caught it. It's been fixed. Thanks. :)

That's a little drastic, economically speaking. You can learn quite a bit from reading these forums. As you can see, the members here are more than happy to answer questions.

You can also read any of several sites on the Internet which address search engine optimization. Most are free.

You might want to check this out: We are discussing this very same thing in the Directories: Yahoo, Looksmart, ODP, About.com forum [webmasterworld.com] right here on WebmasterWorld.
