I can't find myself in excite and I started to dig and see what makes them tick. I can't make heads or tails of the results!

  • what does excite look for...title tags descriptions etc.
  • how does Looksmart fit in? Can't say I see this at all.

I'm not either. The silly spiders only fetch my robots.txt, which I have verified to be compliant, but they have never taken one single page from any of my sites. I have 2, starting back in December 2000.

I've heard speculation on these forums that a re-index will occur on or about Sep 2001.

I'd really like to get on excite, because the #2 isp that does come to my sites is @home. (after AOL). I think that a lot of @home users have their home page default to excite.com by way of the browser that is installed.

As far as looksmart, I can't answer. Maybe it will force excite spiders to look at more than robots.txt. I do have a site that when up to snuff, will be submitted to looksmart and Yahoo. But at this point I can't say what will happen. Maybe somebody has another experience. Excite looks worse than AV now, however AV seems to have gotten back on track.

Im not excited either. I think the Excite engine is very bad.
It took 4 months for my first submission to show up and within a week or two i had been dropped.
I added myself to looksmart thinking i would show up in the excite results but that only happens if the user elects to search the directory as opposed to the web.
I submited a url again 4 weeks ago and im now on the second page of results.

What annoys me is that i am at #1 or #2 on google, fast, lycos etc.

even more annoying is that the #1 result on excite is a redirect and when u click it you get a 404.

The results are stale & poor. and to rub salt in to the wound the bloody spider is all over my robots.txt for the last week.

We've been submitting to Excite for over four months and nothing. Getting blood from Turnips would seem easier than getting on Excite right now. LOL

Took me about five months to get in. They are about the middle of my top ten referrers. MSN is #1, Yahoo a very close second, and Google a strong third.

Exciet has a long history of "dozing off" for 5 or 6 months at a tmie.
    :-(
I don't know what keeps them in business.

Of course it's all moot now, since they've signed on with Overture.

At least for the time being,
