How do you build affiliate sites?

I'm trying to learn more about successful affiliate sites. One thing I'm trying to research is the most effective site at actually getting people to buy.

Obviously the most effective type of site at getting people to come is an informative, content based site. But do they convert? Is writing an article on modifying widgets with links like "click here to buy this modification" going to work?

Is the better idea to simply build out a site that is basically your affiliates products in a list, in categories - much like their site does? And then advertise the heck out of it and hope your conversion rates work out well?

I'd like to hear what some of you have to say about this.

I would recommend both, good content and product pages as well. I actually break down my keywords in: "content keywords" - the keywords that are related to products taht you're selling and "product keywords" - the products that you're selling.

Content pages also convert, but not as good as the product pages. Product pages are much more likely to make a sale than content pages because they're more targeted.

However, content pages will bring you more traffic, they are not as competitive as product keywords most of the time. So, mixing good content with product pages is what I recommmend.
