Hi everyone. I am known as KnowOneSpecial. I was a moderator of SeoChat.

The site has been moved to WebmasterWorld.

Let's see how this merge will perform.

Oh ... I just noted "new users" ... if that hold true, then I will observe and not comment. Been there, done that ... since 1996

The whole site has been redirected to this one sub forum.

Just letting those that get the shock of the redirect know what is up.

500K + threads, many sub forums all folded.

Bad move by Brett in my opinion. No warning to the community to say the least. But this is just my opinion.

I hope archives of these threads are left accessible. Otherwise it's too bad to loose years of contributions and chats (no matter the subject).

Hi KnowOneSpecial and welcome to WebmasterWorld forums! I can't guess what might be in the works regarding the additional SEOChat content, but I can encourage you to have patience. Things don't change overnight here and it is quite possible that it is in the works.

Looking at the Forums Index [webmasterworld.com] I see that there are a few new listings there. At some point an announcement may be made and we can get some insight but until that time it would be speculation to say what is/isn't in the works. I would imagine that it is not a simple plug and play situation or it would have been clear to us all. For now you can feel free to wander around and make yourself at home. We're waiting for a look at the SeoChat threads too. Welcome! ;)

Thanks for coming on over.

First, I want to apologize for not being able to get the old forums converted to a newer VBB format. I tried hard. Having run BBS's and Forums almost full time for 37 (yes 37! don't judge ;-) years, I cherish the value of community and continuity. Thats why I drug it out quite a bit longer than it needed. The last thing I wanted was to be the guy that took seochat off the grid.

The problem was the software that SEOChat and Devshed were running. It was a very old copy of VBB. That version has several known exploits running int he wild.
I worked on it a long time trying to get it to convert to a newer version of VBB - and even got VBB themselves to look at it. The main problem was the code being run had several hooks to old game systems that ran between Devshed and Seochat. There was a chunk of php running out of the mysql db (Yikes!) I am not sure where that code came from and Ninja's were none the wiser either.

That said, the user db and msg db (let alone the avatars..etc), just wouldn't migrate. The closest I came was using an exporter for PHBB to export out of Vbb (but the db came out partially corrupted and I could figure out what was real or corrupted). I really wanted to user names and msgs, but it became pretty clear that a majority(!) of the user names were automated junk. I even started to hand filter out user names with direct msql statements to pull out the users. It was a mess of messes and I grew increasingly frustrated. I worked on this for easily two months last year before being consumed by angst and frustration over the situation.

Then I tried to sell the sites for a song to several interested moderators at both places. After I explained what the situation was with the code, msgs, and users name db's - all three people backed away and passed on the opportunity.

So here we are.

Thank you guys/gals for coming on over. On behalf of the entire community - welcome. Even though the software is different, and our histories are different, there are no two forums on the web that are more closely aligned in ideals and views on the current state of search traffic. My hope is we can keep this subforum active with the spirit and flavor of seochat.

If any of you want to take over moderating here or join as mods on other sub forums - please let Neil Marshall know (@engine).

Thanks
Brett Tabke

Sometimes the easiest to convert a DB into another format is just to scrap the pages and extract the data out of them.

@ Brett Tabke

Good to know that you are receptive to possibly letting SeoChat go.

Just last night not more than 15., 20 hours ago the following conversation between Thomas Harvey and myself took place on Skype.
Apparently we have a communications problem... probably emailed the wrong address .
Thomas Harvey has sent or attempted to send you the following....
"Hi Brett,

I can see there's now a redirect in place on seochat, really do hope you'd consider selling the domain and the code and letting me take it on. There's a quote in our email chain that sums up how I (and I'm sure other mods) are feeling today. .......yada yada yada....

Thanks,

Thomas"

So there are offers on the table. Just saying...

Same objectives ,, ie, ranking on the search engines

Looking forward to being here.

> scrap the pages and extract the data out of them.

We looked at that and could easily still do that. The biggest issue for me, was the user db. I didn't want just a bunch of posts that by members no longer tied to a user name...

Thomas - got your email out of my spam folder and responded in sticky here. I saved your msg out of here as it was kinda personal - we'll go from there.

Wise decision in my opinion. :)

That said, I, too, wouldn't mind an archive to look/search of those past messages, but suspect that if the trove runs back more than a few years, probably contains very outdated commentary.

And if I may be so obvious ... some of that old stuff needs to be FORGOTTEN!

The web has evolved by leaps and bounds ... what worked in 2005 will NOT work now.

Just sayin'

No, you're quite right,,, old threads some about spammed link building to mention just one case... many many other out dated scenarios similar in nature ....

Well hello to some old friends! It was quite a shock to me when I visited and kept getting redirected.

I hope to be an active contributor on here.

Glad not all from SEO Chat is totally lost.

Those old posts could be useful just to check how a "money driven search results search engine" was something absolutely despicable twenty years ago.
Can you imagine something more scurvy than a search engine whose first results are for those who pay more?

... and welcome to everyone coming from SeoChat, of course; I had a barely used account there as well.

One more reason to know what was working in 2005 , for not trying to do it again today :), also, sometimes it's good to remember the "old days" :)

A bit frustrating for those mid-chat but the reasons for shifting are understandable.

Is there likely to be access to any chat history at all, any time soon?

Note: I'm x-posting this in three places, Mods if you disagree, please feel free to nuke.

Welcome.

I regret that Brett found it necessary to close DevShed and SEOChat. While a long time WebmasterWorld member I was also an Admin at Cre8asiteforums and know the gut wrench and loss when Kim had to shut the doors. Every webdev forum built an unique community and voice within the greater niche; that, for various reasons, many of these communities have diminished, been forced to retire, or move lessens our overall body of knowledge.

WebmasterWorld is not SEOChat nor is it DevShed. It is, however, a place full of curious folk who like to poke and prod, help and share, hypothesise and test, complain and cry in their beer. So I hope that some of you forum-less immigrants notice that WebmasterWorld has no wall beyond simple registration, a reasonable set of ToS aka play nice and don't feed the curmudgeons, and is, all in all, a rather pleasant place to hang and to learn.

My personal webdev interests:
* affiliate presell; especially direct rather than through third party networks.
* analytics (other than GoAn/Piwik); especially real time.
* API ad delivery.
* contextual content delivery.
* direct ad space marketing.
* natural language programmed site search.
* personalisation, visitor fingerprinting, x-device usage identification within bounds of privacy ethics and regulation.
* machine learning; especially for analytics and contextual delivery.
* etc.

Hope we can find topics of mutual interest to discuss.
Welcome.

I see a few familiar "faces" here. I was (and still am) "Hikin Mike" and one of the Mods at SEOChat.

FWIW., the link I used to view SEOChat (forums.seochat.com/forum.php) didn't direct it here, so I missed this post until now.
