I realize there are some different attitudes about this, but basically my options are:

1. Create a blog (whether on sub-domain or another domain hosted elsewhere). Create optimized content there, and create links within content back to main site. Links can either point to homepage, or deep-link to pages that directly relate to the phrases in each post.

Problem is, I am really then optimizing two separate sites in this case. SE's probably also see that 95% of my links are just pointing back to a single site, looking unnatural. Besides, 1,000 links from one website doesn't seem that useful.

2. Create content on my site somewhere, as an article repository.

3. I realize that another option is to create the blog on my site and make it a sub-folder, but I prefer keywords as close to the beginning of the domain as possible. Part of this may also depend on the quality of the articles. Don't know if I want my average visitor reading lots of semi-dull info. Beyond this, I am not interested in the debate between sub-folder or sub-domain hosted blog.

I am looking for tried and true answers here as there are established practices for this type of thing, preferrably with cited authoritative sources if possible. If someone comes up with a good answer, I will try to answer them a question or two in return. I get decent rankings overall.
