WebmasterWorld Newsletter
As we complete another circuit of the Sun, and 2016 ends, here at WebmasterWorld we thought it worth reflecting on some of the major changes we recorded and discussed this year, and we also looked forward to some observations for 2017 and beyond.

Before the start of the year we were covering Google Accelerated Mobile Pages, and how it can benefit webmasters and their sites. It finally went live on February 24, 2016. Throughout the past 12-months AMP has become a significant component for a site, and yet another way for sites to present their content through Google. There’s no question, it’s a great way to serve pages without overheads. However, it must be asked if this really is a way forward as data becomes easier to deliver through enhancements in mobile technology, and ultimately, it’s less costly to deliver.

Google Panda and Penguin were two key aspects we all wanted to discuss and, importantly, to know about the updates, and these were some of our hottest topics throughout the year.

Ad blocking really came to the awareness of everyone, with, yet again, some of WebmasterWorld’s hottest threads. For publishers, it was a very important topic as the ad-funded model was in jeopardy, and potentially their whole business model. For advertisers, it meant a diminishing audience and reduced opportunities to reach their markets. Meanwhile, how ironic was it that some of the ad blockers released their own advertising program!

The phenomenon dubbed "Zombie Traffic" seemed to be affecting many sites, and the questions continue. Traffic throttling has become a hot topic, too. Has your site been affected? Let’s hear your views and reports of the zombies, and of traffic throttling.

Hacking, and site security have been major topics throughout the year, and the likelihood of that being an ongoing challenge for webmasters. One of the biggest ever thefts of user details was announced in December, with over 1 billion records stolen from Yahoo.

Apps, and the challenge of earning from Apps, the Internet of Things, and how to develop a business from them, and Microsoft getting ever so much more “open,” and it joining The Linux Foundation with Platinum membership, are all topics that have caught the eye of our Members this year.

Looking forward to 2017, we’ve had several threads with an outlook to the coming year, with one of the key threads mentioned below. Let’s hear your views and opinions as we look forward to developing our businesses and sites over the next twelve months.

These were just a few of the topics the topics we’ve covered, and you can find these and others in our newsletter archives. For this month’s threads, and you can see a few of the discussions in the links of this newsletter. Come and join the WebmasterWorld community and keep up-to-date with the news and topical discussions by following WebmasterWorld on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus, and to use our RSS feed and home page for the hottest topics.
