I intend to move one language of this website onto a new domain. I was thinking to do 301 redirects from all old pages to all new pages and of course update the sitemaps accordingly. This way, Google should understand that my pages changed location and will index the new ones. But, it will probably exclude my webpages from SERPs, at least for a period.[br][br]How can I do this move, in order to make it as painless as possible for my site?

I think it is time to look at the greater picture of data that Google has available.[br][br]Eric Enge had a presentation at PubCon Austin that he felt Panda pumped up 20% user engagment metrics into the algo. It really got me thinking about this aspect indepth. I started to put together a list of possible data sources google could use as metrics (signals), and I was pretty surprised at how large a list it became with very little effort.

We want to expand the site to include all real estate listings in the whole state. Doing this would add about 25,000 new spider-able listings to the site and our longtail searches should increase quite dramatically. Is this something I can do all at once, or should I take it a bit at a time? And, do you have any recommendations on the amount of pages I should add a day?

"For years, I have simply blocked the long query string URLs via the robots.txt file (The long query string URLs have a "virtual" directory in the URL, so I just block that virtual directory). Six weeks after getting penalized by Google Inc. for using promotional links with university web sites that boosted its natural search rankings, Overstock.com Inc. says the penalty, a drop in its Google natural search rankings, has resulted in a 5% drop in revenue, according to the retailer's filing toay with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Every two years Google throws in a big change to their algo. They pick the latest thing they don't like and blow the crap out of a bunch of sites. Lots of people get hit.[br][br]This process scares the bejeepers out of me. In fact, I lived in fear of the algo for years to the point I wouldn't even meddle in anything less than pure.[br][br]I've attempted to make my main site resistant to algo changes. Initially this started out by being whitehat, that's no longer the case. I'm not blackhat, I simply do what works now, and what I expect to work in the future.

Today Google began rolling out their next foray into social recommendations. Google calls it +1, as they explain "the digital shorthand for "this is pretty cool.'"[br][br]To recommend something, you click the +1 button on an organic result or ad you find useful. These +1's will then start appearing in Google search results for others in your social network when they are signed in. Future plans include +1 buttons for websites, too.

"Once you click the link to 'Block all example.com results' you'll get a confirmation message, as well as the option to undo your choice. You'll see the link whether or not you're signed in, but the domains you block are connected with your Google Account, so you'll need to sign in before you can confirm a block.[br][br]Now when you click a result and then return to Google, you'll find a new link next to 'Cached' that reads 'Block all example.com results.'[br][br]Once you've blocked a domain, you won't see it in your future search results. (Side note: Sometimes you may have to search on a new term, rather than simply refreshing your browser, before you'll notice the domain has been successfully removed.) The next time you're searching and a blocked page would have appeared, you'll see a message telling you results have been blocked, making it easy to manage your personal list of blocked sites. This message will appear at the top or bottom of the results page depending on the relevance of the blocked pages."

I can understand wanting to let their users know what the site has, but there's NO WAY they know the other titles and descriptions on the SERP pages better than I know them for my niche, and there's NO WAY they know what stands out on that page or results better than I do, so why do they need to mess with my home page title and description, especially when the page contains a noodp robots tag?[br][br]I don't mind if they want to convert ALL CAPS to First Letter Only or truncate it when it's too long, but I wish they would not change the text when I indicate I don't want it changed by using a meta robots noodp tag.

More interesting to me is their data on "success rate". Here there is no month-over-month change for any of them. However, the baseline shows a major difference. Success rates on Bing are measured at 81.5% and at Google, 65.6%[br][br]One reason for this is probably the definition of success. The detail isn't made very clear, but it does involve visiting another website. As we've been observing for quite a while, Google SERPs contain a lot of information on their own, and the user often doesn't need to visit another website to have found what they were looking for.

The New York Times has quite an article about white hat and black hat SEO - entitled "The Dirty Little Secrets of Search." [br][br]It seems that all through the holiday season, Penney's website was at the top for all kinds of retail searches, including single keywords like "dresses". Given the amount of competition for all these keywords. something smelled funny to the Times. So they brought in an SEO consultant firm, and they found a large number of backlinks, strewn around thousands of nearly abandoned websites.
