482: new post   Creating Your Own Backlinks Helps Ranking In Google
Last week, a competitor that is normally on page 3 to 4 on Google has started to rank number one or 2 for a highly competitive term.[br][br]When i was evaluating their backlinks, 85% of the 20 links they have are all from blog / low content sites they own. When I say low content I mean one post on a blog with a unique url over 6 months ago. The other 15% are from low quality directories.[br][br]I thought Google was trying to get rid of this type of spam links, not reward them...

485: new post   Matt Cutts: Google Algorithm Change Launched
Last week, Google's Matt Cutts was talking about an algorithm change that would try to address low quality content in the SERPs - especially content farms, with a side helping of scraper sites.[br][br]Today Matt announced on Hacker News that a new algo had been pushed live "rank scraper sites or sites with less original content lower". Is that the same thing as content farms?

486: new post   The Google Gospel According to Matt Cutts, Chapter 1:21:2011
... attention has shifted instead to 'content farms,' which are sites with shallow or low-quality content. In 2010, we launched two major algorithmic changes focused on low-quality sites. Nonetheless, we hear the feedback from the web loud and clear: people are asking for even stronger action on content farms and sites that consist primarily of spammy or low-quality content. We take pride in Google search and strive to make each and every search perfect. The fact is that we're not perfect, and combined with users' skyrocketing expectations of Google, these imperfections get magnified in perception. However, we can and should do better.[br][br]As we've increased both our size and freshness in recent months, we've naturally indexed a lot of good content and some spam as well. To respond to that challenge, we recently launched a redesigned document-level classifier that makes it harder for spammy on-page content to rank highly. The new classifier is better at detecting spam on individual web pages, e.g., repeated spammy words, the sort of phrases you tend to see in junky, automated, self-promoting blog comments. We've also radically improved our ability to detect hacked sites, which were a major source of spam in 2010. And we're evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others' content and sites with low levels of original content. We'll continue to explore ways to reduce spam, including new ways for users to give more explicit feedback about spammy and low-quality sites.

491: new post   Thread of Year Nominee - Google Traffic Throttling and Shaping
The topic of Google traffic throttling came up a good number of times over the past two years or more. Some doubt that it happens - others are convinced but have trouble breaking through the wall of other's doubt.

Last year I saw the analytics for one site that showed a drop to zero Google traffic every day at around the same time - it stayed at zero until the next day and then it cycled again. I also saw another major enterprise site that only had first page ranking for a specific 4-hour period every day. Both of the cases persisted for many weeks, but both eventually "returned to normal".

Just recently someone else contacted me with the graphs to show something very strange. Three months of nearly level Google traffic (unnaturally level in my experience) followed by a huge spike that lasted 4 hours - I'm talking up 1,000%.

492: new post   Matt Cutts Offers a "Heads-Up" for 2011
Matt Cutts used a simple tweet to give us a glimpse into the Google search team's 2011 focus. Now the community takes up those two simple sentences and the specifics of what it might mean. [br][br]"Google will more at cloaking in Q1 2011. Not just page content matters; avoid different headers/redirects to Googlebot instead of users."

Google says sentiment analysis is useless for search: "Google has a world-class sentiment analysis system (Large-Scale Sentiment Analysis for News and Blogs). But if we demoted web pages that have negative comments against them, you might not be able to find information about many elected officials, not to mention a lot of important but controversial concepts. So far we have not found an effective way to significantly improve search using sentiment analysis. "

Using a multivariate dataset, across a range of different keyphrases, user intents and user types, Google exposed our site in marginal but significant ways (putting us up one place, dropping Universal search, above or below shopping results, etc). They did this with (at least) four separate sets.

I always tried to make sure the first word in the title tag was exactly the term(s) I was targeting. Now it seems like putting your exact target phrase as the first words in your title tag is some kind of OOP [over-optimization penalty].

The emergence of Social Media Marketing (SMM) has created something of a split in the SEO community. Many old time technical SEO people wish that Twitter would just go way - they don't want to mess around with that soft, schmoozy social media thing.
