Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN Information Services and Merchant Platform, demonstrated a prototype of the new search technology, which he called Local PC File Search, at the meeting in Redmond, Washington.
The proto-type is an MSN toolbar and runs as an add-on to IE. Search results, such as e-mail, e-mail attachments, pictures and documents, were returned nearly instantaneously. Results from the Web for the same search terms are displayed on a separate pane to the right.
The desktop search application had not previously been presented. The tool builds an index of content on a user's computer and makes it searchable. Relevant Internet links can be displayed in a pane on the right side of the search tool. In the demonstration, the Internet links area also contained advertising.
Yeah, bring on more spyware...
