Mac users need to download Windows Media Player, or some other wmv viewer before they can view them.

WMV is a Microsoft format.
If you want all users to be able to view the file, try converting to a format like mpeg.

Windows Media files can be played on a Mac.

Do they have the Windows Media Player installed? Are their mime types set correctly? I'm not super familiar with Macs so I'm not sure how that's done.

Yeah I know that you can play wmv with the windows media player for the mac. But you can't expect the normal website user using a mac to have the wmp for mac installed.

if you have not solved the issue yet, could you sticky mail me a URL?

if possible, you should be EMBEDing the file in the page so it references where to download the player if it is not on the user's computer.

it fires up iTunes

The user needs to have an application that can open .wmv files, like Windows Media Player or VLC and they need to set that app to be the default app for that file type.

Most likely, the user of the mac tried to open a .wmv in iTunes once and clicked the "always use iTunes for this filetype" before they found out it wouldn't work. Install the right software and all should be well. Both the apps I mentioned provide the opportunity to change system defaults (although the system tends to do it on it's own once the software is there.) :)
