My site has improved on www2 from position 23 to position 10. I removed some duplicate content last month that I believe caused a +20 penalty to be applied this past summer. It looks like "half" of the penalty has been removed.

:)

Not seeing anything on www3 yet. In fact it still has the removed duplicate page listed in it.

I just don't understand how google could misrepresent my site twice. People look to google for information about sites and when they type in one of my sites it gives them information about a site I have no control of. It is very misleading to the user.

I have an art web site with a large number of articles full of text. With this update most pages without obvious reason are ranking lower. However some pages jumped forward considerably. The pages that made it forward (some to number one) have all two things in common. They are about two months old (but were in the update for December included) and they suddenly all have a Pagerank of zero (white bar)!!! Does anybody have a clue? This is topsy-turvy! I don't get it.

Well looking at www2, our site got beat down pretty hard. I think this is just the Google bi-yearly SEO shakeup. It will either be normal by the end of this update or by next update.

If you have a site (more than 50 pages) that is well indexed in Google, I don't think there is any way to determine what effect this update is going to have until it goes live in full for a few days. Pages will drop, pages will rise, and you can't find those rising pages any way but surfing through your referral logs in a weeks time.

With Google, you just can't live heavily invested in one keyword or phrase. You have to think broad based.

Old school is thinking in terms of one page pulling 100 referrals a day. Google new school is thinking in terms of 50 pages pulling 2 referrals a day. Still the same 100 referrals, but much more broad based keywords and phrases. It's higher targetting and relevancy factors that in turn provide users the content they want (win-win).

Give it a week to decide what this update has been. If you can determine it is a bad update already, then you need to get busy and build some content to avoid the same thing next month or the month after. More pages and higher quality content will weather any month to month storm.

Brett,

What about if your PR is down to 0, wouldn't that be an instant indication that something went wrong?

Brett makes a good point. Much of the traffic on my sites come from other than the home page. And I seeing a shifting of catched dates between 1, 2, and 3. So far so good, but not counting my chickens before they're hatched.

Chadlerh - description- is it in the ODP [webmasterworld.com...]
or picking it from the page?
It seems to pick the first search relevant text, or directory description.

Make yourself bullet proof from from being 'zapped' by the algo. Build out your content, build out your pr, build your content, don't play the games, build your content, and in shorter time than you realize, you'll be bullet proof to the whims of the algo.

Build your content...

My site is listed for the first time in www2, Brett. Following a lot of sage advice about themes, content and definitely no "tricks" it is 50+ varied pages of extensive English information about a resort where most of the other information is only available in German.
The www2 result? Page 14 for "resort name" search, greyed-out PR, and beaten by sites with no content and/or spamming keywords and/or empty frameset and/or Flash intro and/or no inward links. From a very amateur (and jaundiced) point of view, it seems that keyword in domain, keyword in title and ODP listing are beating content hands down. I was looking forward to building and tweaking content and themes - now I don't even know where to start...

welcome to WmW stever

- Now I don't even know where to start... here is just about the best place to start.

I'd work on your link popularity so far you've only got 4 sites linking to you, but I'm sure other's will come back with more advice

I've so far been quite lucky with this update; picked up some more new links :) cheers Google

Another welcome to WmW, stever.

>site is listed for the first time in www2
Then don't worry about the greyed out PR, it's normal for a new site mid-update.

>don't even know where to start...
Don't even think about starting until this update settles in. Then take it one keyword phrase at a time. And yes, do look at page titles, and HTML page naming and link text as well. It's not exclusively what's in the domain name, but in the total file path.

It's not unusual for a site to first get listed low, at least once it's in it's a starting place. Sometimes rankings aren't instantaneous and take a few months of "tweaking and nudging", and improvement does come.

Well, so long for the hits from Google.

My site dropped from the 1st place to somewhere between the last results. I don't know what I've done wrong. Didn't change anything on my site!

pgsbs

Donít loose hope a couple of months ago I lost some major rankings during the update but they did return within the next few days, so perhaps try again next week.

Mind you I did notice your site is a framset :(

Wishing you luck

Stever - Quality content wont rank well in google unless your page title and KW densities are of equal quality. Dmoz listing is a real boost but only if the other factors are in place.

The new stuff is now on www.

Moved up a in few places, nothing lost. The site that disappeared last time is back in, a new site is well placed with a description for one keyword that's the entire first sentence intact. Some important links that disappeared last time are showing up again. Google was very good to me this time around.

SmallTime, I am talking about the so called Google Glitch from last update, where you type a domain into google search and it gives you a link to a site other than your own. Here is what googleGuy said about it last time.
[webmasterworld.com...]

I think it is being done on purpose. We will have to wait and see when he gets back from vacation.

I know that people from google stop by here sometimes but if your site has vanished you can post about it on.
groups [groups.google.com]
And the thread. Update on WWW2 I have been removed!!!
Maybe they check there more often, what do i know.

reminder: please do not post urls of "problem sites" - even sneaky ones. It's hard to keep it sorted out.

Well, the update appears to be solid and done. I can't see a difference yet in anything of ours. Not even any minor movement really. We just had a bunch of pages added and a few new sites picked up.
