Some ideas to generate revenue for WebmasterWorld :-

1) I think Advertising text and non intrusive banner ads should be a no brainer.

2) I also saw Brett's post on Paid Press Releases section [webmasterworld.com ] which makes sense.

3) Marketplace to buy and sell domains. WebmasterWorld makes % of sale.

4) Create videos of pubcon sessions and sell them (either as Dvds or downloads).

Please share your ideas :)

Why not? My only concern would be any legal implications down the road. Buyer "A" is pissed at seller "B" for falsifying traffic stats or some other form of misrepresentation. Wants his money back. WW has already taken a piece of that money and as a result gets thrown right in the middle of it. I'm not a lawyer though...

Oh by all means. I've never been to one but have been wanting to go for years. I'd buy one. Would you need releases from everybody who appears in the video?

I think Pubcon holds rights for the event and can make the speakers/ panelists sign waiver when they are finalized for their respective sessions.

This is quite possible and happens all the time. Maybe a moderator can review all such posts and edit/ delete posts which look like scam. Even add standard disclaimers to all domains which are sold.

Commission from the Seller? Then the bogus seller loses twice- refund and commission.

As I mentioned in another thread, I used to use a photographic forum extensively, they had banner ads in top of page and sometimes side of page. 1) it never bothered me in the slightest, and 2) I never clicked on them, if everyone was like me there might have been no revenue from those ads, esp if they were pay as you click.

5) Sponsored Post on home page. This is tricky as it directly conflicts with editorial policy. Most print publications face this dilemma. But charge hefty fees for Sponsored Post on home page (they stay there for a week, fortnight or a month and charge accordingly). There have to be dos and donts on what can and cannot be said in the sponsored post.

Yes! I think these would sell very well. (I'd certainly buy them!)

A buy and sell section like Flippa would be good to have, at least for selling sites or domains. Not sure about letting people sell services.

Also, why not make a job board? Hiring good SEM/SEO talent is always a challenge for big and small companies, even in NYC. I would think we have a high concentration of talents on here that would make it worthwhile to pay $50 for a job post.

I think other conferences are already selling them either as part of paid memberships or direct downloads.

5) Create authoritative content and sell it :- Ask Moderators of each forum to create authoritative video content (most of them are moderators because they have written brilliant posts in their areas of expertise) . Do a revenue share with moderators and sell this content. If professional video recording is not possible, send Flip cameras , do basic editing and sell these videos.

Re: Dvds

I'd like to see what goes on behind the scenes too. When industry leaders have had a few drinks and now it's 2:00 am and the laptops are open and they're brainstorming in the hotel room.

That's the stuff I'd pay good money for.

I was only half serious about that. What happens at PubCon doesn't necessarily have to stay there though. Maybe not actually in the hotel rooms but candid interviews outside perhaps?

I don't know. It's a slow Wednesday morning and I was asked to participate so that's what I'm doing.

6) Paid Online Networking Events. Members can interact with each other in such events. Make it once every quarter. Again paid events. Ideal for people who don't have time to travel to pubcon.

Create your own ad network and fill it with relevant products which offer quality and value; and above all be discerning. Dot these around the site without overwhelming the content and users would have the best of both worlds. Sprinkle in a few validated independents for good measure.

We all buy stuff but it's the relentless onslaught of crud which taints a good site.
