Yahoo Japan to keep name, services despite U.S. sale
In selling off its internet business, U.S.-based Yahoo Inc. will also be changing its name, but Yahoo Japan Corp. plans to keep the “Yahoo” brand and continue its slate of services.
Regardless of what company owns the brand license, Yahoo Japan’s contract is said to allow it to use the brand as long as it wants.
Yahoo Japan has paid more than ¥10 billion in licensing fees per year to the U.S. Yahoo. The sale of Yahoo’s internet business to Verizon Communications Inc. of the United States also included the rights to the “Yahoo” brand. Starting next year, Yahoo Japan will pay Verizon for licensing.
