... with the exception of youtube, has any social site been improved when a heavyweight corporate bought it?

here's hoping this is an exception!

BBC is now carrying the story..with more details
[bbc.co.uk...]

The latter link mentions two interesting facets of the deal..

Tumblr's pron and how Yahoo will have to cope with advertisers on Tumblr..

The exodus of Tumblr users to wordpress etc since the deal with yahoo was announced..

ridiculous buying from yahoo once again. maybe trying to put together a 'nice' package for exit. yahoo's philosophy has never been about such profane things like current earnings. they suck so much, it's unbelievable.

I liked Geocities .. and I'm not sorry for that. I liked MSN Groups too.

Something about those slow clunky old platforms just appeals to me I guess .. Am I just waxing nostalgic, or am I just missing the ability to interact much more closely with the internet?

Oh well .. I guess that's just the way it is .. sacrifice user interaction for more ads ..

At any rate .. Tumblr needed money, and Yahoo needed teenagers .. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me ..

what for? wasn't a company supposed to earn money? correct me if i'm wrong, but i still expect that as the ultimate goal as an entrepreneur. everything else till now was an expensive hobby by david karp. well ok, he at least finally earned big money, the craziness of it all.

but yahoo will have to bring it to market, in other words: push ads and pull user data. with that setup, good luck earning your billion back and profit from tumblr.
