Open Search Integration
Are you using it? Why or why not?

I'm noticing on sites like Wikipedia that the search bar built into Firefox and IE7 are now being highlighted.

I dug into the code and saw a meta tag I had not seen before:

<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" title="Search Title" href="/search/opensearch.xml" />

I did some research, and found that you can intergrate your site search into these built in search bars.

I also assume you would then be able to search your site from the search bar even if your not currently on your site.

Does anybody plan on integrating this meta tag into your web pages?

Any reasons why, or why not?

Hello Jeremy, My web hosting offers an internal search with my hosting package. I have looked at it and am undecided whether to put it on my site or not. May or may not be a good thing to add. You want people to stay on your site and look around for the information and if they type in a word that is not on your page they may just leave. Let me know if you implement it on your site, if you have one and if you like it.

What I've done for my website was to add a search page with a search bar integrated into the template so its on all the pages.

People might search for content not on my site, but if they do, it gets logged into my database for me to consider adding content for or not. In the interim, I have advertisements shown for products related to their search (which allows me to profit even without existing content on my site).

But I'm thinking about taking my search one step further and integrating it into the user's browser via the open search meta tag.

I don't know if this will be of benefit or not to my visitors, that's something that will need to be I get from studying user behavior and visitor comments.

I'm wondering what people who have integrated it into their site think about it.
