Using twin servers and sending traffic to nearest server, for dummies

I've got a server in the UK doing naff all, except being the recipient of a daily backup from my Singapore server... My target audience is in Asia but a large chunk of my traffic comes from the Americas and Europe. It occurred to me I could tackle the steep learning curve and figure out how to sync the two servers in real time (I have MySQL databases running) and send the traffic to the nearest server... in order to improve load times etc.

But where to begin. Could someone give me a truncated overview of where I should begin, and where I should be looking for tutorials (so I don't waste too much time reading the wrong stuff)?
