WebmasterWorld Weekly Roundup January 10

 10:32 pm on Jan 10, 2013 (gmt 0)

This week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is always a draw for anyone with an interest in ‘gadgets.’ I’ve been interested in electronics, technology and gadgets for as long as I can remember. One of the first gadgets I ever made was a low power version of a tazer-like device. This ‘gadget’ seemed to highly amuse my peers as they leapt in the air through the mild electric shock. Being enterprising, I started making them and selling the devices for pocket money. All was going well until the teachers realised what I was doing and the mini business was shut down.

That interest in gadgets continues today as I study the announcements coming out of CES. I love the technology, and would be an early adopter of many developments, if I could afford it. Most of the time I’ll wait until the problems are ironed out and the product becomes more affordable. There were a few exceptions, notably, CD players and video recorders. I spent a small fortune on that technology at the time.

There’s one gadget that everyone is so excited over, and it’s a tablet computer. I’ve not yet seen the need for one. Sure, I’d like one, but what could I do with it I can’t do between my laptop and my smartphone. One day, perhaps, I’ll relent. The 7-inch tablet, or ‘phablet’ as they are being dubbed might be the most useful.

As this is the first WebmasterWorld Weekly of the year, I wish you a Happy and Prosperous 2013.

If this is your first WebmasterWorld Weekly, all earlier weekly roundups are in the Supporters Forums, and, if you have access, you can read them here.

Here's the latest WebmasterWorld Weekly Roundup.

This week, Twitter's engineering department has explained how it uses humans to help improve the speed and accuracy of its search. Twitter

Affiliate web publishers share their personal experiences of not being paid their fair share of affiliate commissions. Has that been your experience, too?

Yes, it's Firefox 18.0 released this week, and speed and graphics resolution are a couple of the featured developments. Firefox

WebmasterWorld's monthly look at Google's SERPs changes for January 2013 was published. If you're keen to know what's happening, follow this thread. If you have some observations, please contribute as this thread is a very useful indicator of changes as they happen.Google

One of the hottest threads this week is the one titled, "Business Survival, With Or Without Google Organic Traffic." WebmasterWorld Members discuss how the status of Google organic traffic has changed, and how to find alternative traffic.

The big breaking story of early 2013 was the FTC's ending of the Google antitrust investigation.

As Webmasters, we've known this for a while: It's hard to avoid Google+. "Google+ is Google," says Vice President Bradley Horowitz. "The entry points to Google+ are many, and the integrations are more every day." Have your say in our thread.

Can internal linking cause a Google penalty? Several webmasters think it may be the case. What about you, what's your experience on the topic?

A US Congressman is seeking and investigation over the 'leaked' Google FTC antitrust announcement, which appeared before the official announcement.

Following on from Microsoft's announcement that it's discontinuing Messenger in favour of Skype, it seems the date of March 15th is the deadline.

The question was raised, what was Google's Eric Schmidt doing in North Korea? It appears it was a private trip to discuss a free and open Internet. Splendid!

That's it for this week. If you've spotted some news that we haven't covered or discussed, drop me a stickymail.
Have a great week!

LMAO ... Leave it to the educational system in America to crush an inventor in the making ... And, they wonder why we're getting passed by ... I'm sure we'd all be 'shocked' if they'd have just let you run with the idea.

Hope you and everyone here has a great 2013 too!

As this is the first WebmasterWorld Weekly of the year

From where I'm sitting it's the first WebmasterWorld Weekly ever. Cursory (re)search suggests that the thread version formerly lived in a members-only subforum. Is this a short-lived "oops" or do us ordinary civilians get it every week from here on?
