A Webmaster's Health - Anything Is Possible!

As most of you know, being a webmaster can mean spending countless hours in front of a computer screen. It's done with passion so the hours tend to fly by but it is a sedentary activity and for many who don't or cant balance this with physical activity it means weight gain and related health issues can creep up on you over time (especially right after a stressful Panda update!).

I'd like to introduce you to a fellow named Ryan Gebhardt. He's married, has a beautiful young daughter and is, like all of us, a webmaster. I've known Ryan online only in another private forum I occasionally visit(phpbay) and he posted something personal about his health that is inspiring. He's asked that people share it so that it motivates as well as helps him accomplish his goal of becoming an Ironman.

Not too long ago Ryan weighed over 400lbs and had dedicated himself to building websites in his spare time(he's also a chiropractor). Now, he's dedicated to being there for his family a lot longer and has lost 175lbs and is doing things he never thought possible(for him) just a couple of years ago.

Ryan has posted his story(video) on Facebook here - [apps.facebook.com...]

Ryan asks that if you want to, if you find his story motivating with no strings attached, that you click on the "vote for this" button on the bottom left of the video. I did because losing 175lbs is no small feat, it should bring rewards, and because he is a finalist where only the top 2 of 15 entrants will be chosen and sponsored for the upcoming Ironman. I'd like to see a webmaster win this :)

Now excuse me while I go do a few extra laps in the pool!

Wow. If I loose so much weight, I am no longer there. He lost me entirely.

Im in front of my computer at least 8 hours a day, but I also play soccer 3 times a week for my club and go to the fitness club 1-2 times a week. A tip, if you dont have that much time, the best way to get a good stamina is to make 10 sprints of 100 meter with 2 min break between. of cause 15 min warm up is a must.

There's another similar thread, I think, but I couldn't find it.

If all else fails, get one of those computer addons-- the kind that used to come packaged with Stupid Mac Tricks-- that stops every so often and says Nuh-uh, you're not typing one more character until you get off your ### and leave the keyboard for {some other pre-set time period}.

Apart from ongoing aerobic exercise... another tip is to set a timer to make sure you stand up and move around at least every 20 minutes.
