The current system lets members edit posts without adding a "edited by... " foot not if no other posts have been published in the thread before the edit has been submitted.

I'd rather that all edited posts were publicly noted as such.

Perhaps you could expand on the supposed opportunities for "abuse" that you initially mentioned, then edited out of your above post ;)
I don't see the interest in having a forced "edited by" timestamps for every typo correction, and the time limit for editing a post is quite short so you can't go back too often to revise your post anyway. So in short I don't see a problem with the current setup, and a forced edit timestamp would by messy, threads would become littered with the things.

The idea is to give people 5-10minutes to fix typos with the "edited by" showing up.
