Some things don't need to be 2.0

I suppose now it is looking a bit bland. A new one could brighten things up.

A true programmer's logo imo.
10:09 am on Dec 10, 2008 (gmt 0)
Perhaps but there are designers in here as well as programmers. ;)
3:13 pm on Dec 10, 2008 (gmt 0)
i dont have a problem with it...dont get me wrong... clean, simple, conveys the concept very well...
it contrasts with the overall color scheme of the forum well...
NOW... im not saying it "must" happen... but why not have a contest, for lack of better words, see what comes out of it and you may like something you see...
doesnt even have to be formal, just see what some of the designers in here can do...
maybe it works, maybe it doesnt... thats all im asking...

Very true BeeDee, but I'm talking from a (non-designer by default) programmer perspective
3:02 am on Dec 11, 2008 (gmt 0)
I'm not a designer so I say why fix it if it's not broken...? The 1990's logo fits well with the 1990's design of the site. No offense :-)

Whats there in LOGO...... go for the quality and quantity ;)I am using this board since long time and finally i decided to join this board. I had never thought of its LOGO design or anything else just try to get good things out of this board ;)
3:16 am on Dec 29, 2008 (gmt 0)
Logo? I don't even look at the logo.
11:23 am on Dec 29, 2008 (gmt 0)
But you are a > 9K posts regular. I would not expect you to. :)
1:59 pm on Dec 29, 2008 (gmt 0)
One of the main reasons i use this board only is beacause of its great layout, simple and CLEAN, free from all those ads, can't find the content let alone see it on some other boards. (Plus all the great guys and info mind you!)
(Hail the white space)

Let me clarify since this thread took a left turn at... "the layout"
i have no desire to alter the layout, look, structure, color scheme...whatever else anyone thinks.
i do however look at the logo... i know not all of you are designers, but thats my cup of joe....
i design and develop. so its an "eye" thing for me...
im not talking about putting up more Ads, or anything like that...
i said it might be time to look at other logos.... thats all.
10:40 am on Dec 30, 2008 (gmt 0)
Tony will you do a new one for nothing? ;)
3:11 pm on Dec 30, 2008 (gmt 0)
of course i would... only if i have 10 other entries...
i can post them on my site if anyone feels up to it.
im not expecting any monetary gain from this ... never have never will.

That looks like a challenge... so who are the other nine then?
(I am Grade One Crap with graphics so I'll sit this one out.)

IMHO, the current logo is a keeper; it's terrific, and always has been. The text proportions are just fine, the branding is accurate (world-wide reach and appeal), and there couldn't be a more compact, appropriate and attractive representation of the entire world than the present one has, with the map in the background.
Also, the size is perfect, since it leaves room for all the important global site navigation in the middle, with a current graphic/link of interest in the right corner.
3:40 am on Jan 3, 2009 (gmt 0)
The current logo is just 109 × 56px. If anyone wants to try designing a better one, they should stick to those dimensions. Small is beautiful.
4:51 am on Jan 3, 2009 (gmt 0)
Not only is Rosalind's point about it being 109x56px important, the current logo is legible at less than 50% of its size; not only that but the graphics remain recognisable and the colours have great contrast. Not something that can be said for many of the whimsical logos designers feel are required today. Not everyone has good vision, and many of those with good vision are colour blind. I guess the point here is; fussy details, pastel shades, gradients, shadows as heavy as the text and stupid reflections are just going to make the logo a whole deal less usable.
That being said, I would prefer the current logo to switch to roman rather than oblique type so make it match the rest of the site.

I vote for a spinning globe...

let's see it redone with Comic Sans and a spinning globe. THAT'S old-school. Does anyone still have Kai's Power Tools installed?
9:41 am on Jan 10, 2009 (gmt 0)
I vote for a spinning globe.
Isn't the present logo the static equivalent of a spinning globe? Very 1999 IMHO.
(Ducks as he runs for the door) :)

Comic Sans ... THAT'S old-school.
Comic Sans wasn't even started until last 1994... not what I'd call old school...
10:09 pm on Jan 10, 2009 (gmt 0)
@vvv: 1994 isn't old? What's old for you? Helvetica? Bauhaus Regular? Trajan Gothic? ;)
3:17 pm on Jan 12, 2009 (gmt 0)
how about Fixedsys?
well...if anyone takes the time, or actually has the time these days, if you happen to work on a sample new logo, you can email it to me, watermarked if you need...and i will post it on my site with mine.
dont rush me gosh....uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I would appreciate a logo change, I'm in the process of getting the Marketing Director to sign off on a full membership for me here, as a "less technical" person, I am a little concerned that he will equate the "less modern" look of the site to "less up to date information".
After all it may seem a little odd to people who don't know the forum well to see that a site dedicated to the best the web has to offer is so dated in appearance, I remember when I first saw the site I was dubious, and only carried on looking because my old boss insisted I do so!
5:28 pm on Jan 12, 2009 (gmt 0)
Yoshimi, not every site's purpose is suited to minimalist design, but there's an effective argument in favor that's applicable, in the case of this site, from Jakob Nielsen, still today's foremost usability expert [useit.com].
I'd suggest having your Marketing Director take a look at some of the various forum libraries here; content is still king, and fast load time is the crown.

I think Jacob Neilsen's website is ugly and very difficult to navigate. Tony, can you send him a wee logo too. ;)

But BDDubya, ugly sells [google.com]. :D
