Temporary Glitches and weirdies on the site.
...under construction

Lots of threads are popping up here and in Foo reporting the weird goings-on at WebmasterWorld.

I'd like to assure you that you're not crazy, strange things are happening, and yes, we know about them (well, most of them).

Brett is doing some major software upgrades. He is slowly adding features to the software and rolling them out (although you don't see them - they're not turned "on" yet). As each mini-release happens, a few glitches work their way to the surface. A few features have been "taken away" so that they can be worked on or upgraded.

Please keep an eye on the announcements [webmasterworld.com] link at the top of the page. Major news will be posted there.

Also, please read the pinned thread at the top of the forum, V5 WebmasterWorld Software Updates, Additions, and Changes [webmasterworld.com].

Finally, although the admins and mods are aware of many of the glitches, there is no way to catch them all! You can help us out by replying to this thread and listing any problems you are seeing - that way they're all in one place (rather than in 15 different threads).

Thanks for your help.

(Edited to add: I've spliced all of the various threads together and added them to this one, so that we can minimize dupe threads.)

A couple of days ago I posted this message asking about 'automated welcome messages'. Satisfactory answer, Mods saying they would look into it.

Today in my control panel, I wanted to click on 'My Thread' but clicked 'My Flags' by mistake. Amongst my flagged threads was this message also from me, exactly (3 days off) 2 years ago about the exact same thing.

So this year I will post exactly the same questions I ask 2 years ago ... if only I knew how to track my messages by date posted :)

I know it's rubbish but the situation made me smile

I've noticed a couple 4 year old threads drug up from the grave. :-)

Or is it dragged? Nah . . . okay, reincarnated.

My custom search (Google and Yahoo!) disappeared from the top of the page.

I don't recal where the code for those was here, in a thread, and even ig I did it looks like the box to insert the code is gone.

That was a nice feature, made searching WW easier.

Yeah I noticed that too [webmasterworld.com], it used to be in the control panel and you dropped some code in, "custom headers and footers" I think it was.

Note Hawkgirl's response in that thread - it explains a lot of the oddities you might be noticing right now:

A lot of small code changes are happening on the site to pave the way for larger changes. I suspect if things are disappearing for you, it's not because you're forgetful!

Hang tight while the site is tweaked over the coming weeks.

Is anyone else having erratic problems using the site since about midday yesterday?

Periodically (about 50% of the time), requests for active.htm result in [an error occurred while processing this directive] and clicks to forums redirect me to [webmasterworld.com...] with a login prompt (although I'm logged in).

Is this just me? It happens in a few different browsers, and I put it down to site upgrades at first, but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm putting many down to the upgrades going on. [webmasterworld.com]

So is that a "shut up, we're upgrading" or a "yes, tell us what goes wrong"?

;)

Sounds like the former. ;)

Both. Any glitches or bugs can be reported ... But since Brett is working on the software, we're somewhat more likely to already know about them!

Both

Shut up and tell you what goes wrong? huh? :P

These problems seem to have disappeared anyway.

...along with my custom html header, although I expected that. 'Unaswered posts' was one of three links I had, and that appeared of its own accord in the top navigation. The other two were 'my threads' and 'my flags' in case anyone cares. Flags are hard to use though since the date ordering has always been screwed.

Custom header also disappeared for me, which means no more search :(

That code removed to work on other code and template issues ... hang tight while the software is being tweaked.

Keep an eye on the Announcements [webmasterworld.com] (found at the top of the page in the nav bar) for info on software updates.

Shut up and tell us what's wrong and please try to be patient because I think you'll like the improvements you'll see when this is all finished! ;)

I'd say "Shut up already" in the public posts, but use the Report Problem [webmasterworld.com] link, way down at the very bottom of every page.

There used to be some code in the CP that you dropped in to add the Google search to the WebmasterWorld header, it's now gone or my old-timer's disease has reached the point where . . . what was I saying?

Was this an intentional drop of the recent additions, did it move, or did I just forget where it was? :-)
