I think you need to do something more focused. Not just "surprising" vs "amusing", but something where the categories themselves are catchy. Don't go to the other extreme where you start with 92 categories and most of them only have 2 or 3 pictures, because that's depressing, but really. Gather a fistful of representative pictures and ask yourself what each one makes you say.
Depressing pictures. NSFW pictures. "This is not photoshopped" pictures. "Why don't they have that where I live?" pictures.
And then apply massive editing to get past the initial "Only in Nessunistan" or "I would never have expected that in Niemandsburg of all places" or "I thought people stopped doing that in 1672" and all the other stereotypical responses that will be the first thing out of your mouth but you have to pretend it isn't.

Thanks. I actually decided to remove the categories for now, since the domain speaks for itself. And as you mentioned Amazing or Funny or Crazy all kinda sound the same.
I also find having lots of categories kinda boring as well as having the filter options of: Best, Worst, and most Popular, Most Commented"
I want to have a site extremely simple. It's my first time and first experience starting out extremely simple.
I have a very cute logo center aligned and one button "SUBMIT" underneath it. The rest are pictures sorted out similar to Google Image underneath the logo. I have also placed a "+Top Rated" link on the corner right and that's it for now.
When you click on each thumbnail, the original sized picture pops up with a star rating feature beneath it as well as the FB comment plugin enabled.
