| Sort content by freshness or rating?

Hi,
If you sort the content by votes/rating, users don't get to see the fresh content, unless they change the sorting order.
If you sort it by freshness, users don't get to see the most liked content.
Both sorting options are there, I'm confused which one should be the default one. The site has user generated content.
Please share your thoughts on this.

Personally I would prefer fresh content but then I don't give a **** about things like Z list "celebs" so probably don't count as a typical user.
