Welcome to WebmasterWorld floquetdeneu. Alexa? They aren't to be taken very seriously for most site data. Only the very top sites seem to have accurate reports. Do a search of WebmasterWorld and you can find a number of threads on the topic.

Please read this discussion about the Alexa toolbar [webmasterworld.com] from 2003. Nothing has changed. ;) Welcome to Webmasterworld!

Thanks for the responses. It's exactly what I suspected. What somehow puzzled me was the fact, that there's a number of SEO sites [...] that use it as a reference of measure. I suspect, it's because it looks like an objective reference, and provides techie type data. Also it is part of a big internet company (Amazon). But even the big players fail sometimes with their business ideas. SEO businesses like the ones mentioned above shouldn't be taken so seriously, either, I think. I remember many years back that I checked a site which had sent a client an email soliciting advertisers and touting its Alexa popularity. The Alexa toolbar, though, had left a trail. Alexa indicated that visitors to the site which offered the ads also frequently visited a site that offered tips on how to manipulate your Alexa ranking. ;)

You can also check your site on Compete and Quantcast. I find that for the sites I study all 3 services show similar results. I have used Alexa for about 4 years. I think it is fairly accurate for popular sites. But for lowly ranked sites the data can bounce around A LOT. There are now millions of websites out there.

i remember those times w hen it was really popular but not any more i think. just imagine that in 2005 they had about 10 mlns downloads of their toolbar. But still i di not know that fact that the company provided any info about how many of these were used in reality.
