i use alerts for domain names of my competitors as well as myself, and also set up alerting for a seo company as an experiment really
I get alerts for that seo firm every single day, new links and such, but noting on all the others including my own site.
whats up with that?

Google will only send an alert if it crawls a page that matches your domain. So it must not have hit a page yet with your domain.
As a tip, you can now automate your google alerts creation [with certain third party tools]. [edited by: physics at 5:11 pm (utc) on Nov 6, 2011]
