|Vanity domains & dedicated IP|
| 10:26 am on Sep 16, 2011 (gmt 0)|
Assuming I have a main domain my-example-domain.com hosted on a dedicated IP, as well as a vanity domain myexampledomain.com, what is the best solution from a SEO point of view:
1) host both domains on the same dedicated IP, with the vanity domain consisting simply of one .htaccess 301 file redirecting to the main domain;
2) host the main domain on its dedicated IP, and don't get hosting at all for the vanity domain, but use the registrar's URL 301 forwarding facility?
Or does it not make any difference at all?

If you are redirecting the domain, it doesn't really matter at all where you host it. I would go with #1.

if you host them both on the same server you can properly redirect requests without chained redirects.
if you use registrar forwarding, you will get a sitewide redirect that might possibly require an additional redirect from the canonical hostname.
