your own site's SERP as lightbox

hi

Just working on a new site which has an internal search function. Another developer has configured this so that when someone does a search, rather than returning them to a new SERP, the search result is displayed as like a lightbox display, you see the search result over the top of the original page which then appears to have a grey filter applied. While a similar method is commonly used to display images (lightbox) I can't recall seeing it used for search. Can anybody spot any problems with using such a method for search results?

Thanks

It does not sound as if it is very friendly for older browsers.

Sounds kind of awesome anyway though.
