Lots of Folders

I'm creating a web site that could have 1000 to 2000 folders directly under the domain name. ie:
mydomain.com/apples/
mydomain.com/oranges/
mydomain.com/banannas/

I'm doing it that way so people can write in a URL address more easily. From an administrative aspect, it would be a lot easier for me if the structure had more subdirectories in it. But to make it easier and shorter for people to write the url into the address line, I would rather just have the one-directory structure above. My two questions are:

1. what is the maximum number of folders I can have directly under the domain name?

2. Is there some way to maintain the short address lines above, and yet use a deeper subdirectory structure on the server?

Of course, any solution would also have to not harm search results.

Depends on the OS.

URL rewriting.

Best left for the SE experts. My area of expertise is software development.
