Today I received a cold-call ostensibly from my Registrar (one of the largest ones), and the woman on the phone was asking me if I would like to renew my domains over the phone.
Our earliest domain to expire would be in about 2 months from now, and I told her that I would log in myself and renew when the time came (we don't keep auto-renew on).
She told me that since they had our credit card on file, she could just go ahead and do it now if I wanted. My paranoia kicked in and I said "No. I don't want to do that now."
I told her again that I would do it when I get around to it. She did not persist any further and asked me to please call if I needed any help with anything. Then we hung up.
Only afterward did I wish I had asked her why they would bother to extend this personal service to us, since we only have about 10 domains, hardly power users by any stretch. That's assuming it really was the Registrar in the first place and not some scammer.
Anyway, does anyone else have any experience with this? Have you received this type of call? Is it a scam or legit? Please share your thoughts.
