most websites require you to confirm a new account by clicking a link in email. i noticed thay youtube.com doesnt send confirmation email. they immediately activate your account. as a user i find this a big + because i dont have to look for welcome email and confirm it - lots of such email go to spam folder anyway and if you dont find it, user is lost.
as a webmaster i find this a big - because people will use false emails and you can never contact them later - means there is no "lock-in" system.
how do you find this and what approach would you use and why?
