Adding Video to Flash Site
add video flash template

Can someone tell me how to add a wmv or flv video into a full flash template?

The link can be seen below and the photo in the middle is what I want to click on and able to access the video which should load into the page or more than likely the next page that appears when you click. It's blank now because I removed the image that was there.

[snip]

Below I provide the xml file in case it is a part of the process.

Thanks
Dave

drdave,

Could you please define what you mean by "a full flash template"?

Thank you.

The entire website is made in flash.

Hey folks

I still can't seem to find the help I need. Not even from the people who own the template other that one suggestion using Adobe After Effects and even so, their help is very poor.

Well I don't own After Effects so that leaves me out.

This template uses xml file to place images in the main page. 9 images total.

I am trying to target a video once a visitor click the center image of the girl playing the conga. So the video should load into the center replacing the image there now.

Well in my quest for answers I checked the w3schools help files and found the xlink attribute as it is applied to xml docs but cannot get it to work even when I tried it with the existing images there now.

Obviously there is a lot more going on in that xml file and maybe why my approach failed. There is a settings, menu and page section which I am sure affects the way the images are been manipulated and the overal function of the template.

At the moment, clicking on the image will only take you to a blank page.

The template is used with the same xml file I posted when I opened this thread.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

okay, but

I am trying to target a video once a visitor click the center image of the girl playing the conga. So the video should load into the center replacing the image there now.

And there is the problem, if I read this correctly. Your Flash is a slide show, it is designed for images, not video. It's a bit complicated to explain but the methods you use within the Flash to display an image object as opposed to loading, streaming, and playing a video are different; how the data is loaded into Flash is different, the programming is different, the symbols used to hold the objects are *like* different data types. This player will never work to rotate video, unless you have been told otherwise.

Obviously there is a lot more going on in that xml file and maybe why my approach failed.

The problem is not likely the xml file itself, it's what Flash is doing with the data it imports from it. Note: there MAY be something wrong with the XML file or how you've altered it, but this would be a problem in addition to the fundamental one.

What Flash does is "read in" the XML file, parse out the data, and uses the data internally in arrays and variables to refer to external resources so that anyone can alter the behavior of their .swf without recompiling it in the Flash development environment. For example, the XML file you've provided there "tells" your .swf where to look for gallery images, which images to load, and in what order.

You can create Flash to read in an external XML file to do anything, from import images to import a video list to import a book. It depends on how you program the Flash.

At the moment, clicking on the image will only take you to a blank page.

We can pursue this, and maybe even figure out why it's doing it, but the point is really moot if you hope to use a Flash slide show player when what you need is a Flash video player, or a combination of the two.

True, but I was only planning on using one video only in the center. But from your response I take it that the xml won't work for holding one video leaving the other images in place?

>>there MAY be something wrong with the XML file or how you've altered it.<<

The xml file that is there now is how it came from them. I only tried the xlink coding thing but I since replaced the xml file back with the original.

>>You can create Flash to read in an external XML file to do anything. It depends on how you program the Flash.<<

I am guessing that this answered my question. I will have to reconstruct the entire template in order to achieve my desired results? Something I am not good at doing.

They told me it could hold videos but they were of no help with their instructions.

If my responses are on target then I will just let this person know that I won't be able to accomplish what she wants. I did warn her though that I could not guarantee the video portion of it until I download the template.

Thanks so much for your help.

I await your response
Dave

If this Flash object supports video, this really does change things. I've no idea how to tell you to do that and without being able to open it in Flash, follow the documentation, etc., it would be impossible to do so. If you don't have to programs and skill to do this, IMO rather than come back to the client with "can't be done" your best course is to outsource it to someone who can do this. You'll build business relationships and expand your service capabilities, the client will be happy, it's all win/win.
