Telecoms group BT is to more than double the headline broadband speeds for millions of its residential and business customers for no extra cost and will also trial super-fast fibre-based services, it said on Wednesday.
the new service with speeds of up to 20 megabits per second would be available to 40 percent of homes and businesses in the country.
I would just like them to sort out the "last mile" so that I could get the 8meg connection that I pay my ISP for. Or even the 4 meg that BT said I could get rather than the 2 that I get in real life.
Once analogue TV is switched off, the government is going to flog most of that spectrum to mobile phone operators to use for mobile broadband. You might find the last mile in fact becomes "the last few hundred metres from your nearest phone mast".
