.com sites vs language sites eg .fr and .de
Does Google reward .com sites higher organic ranking than language sites?

We are working on optimising our .com page and our .fr and .de pages for specific keywords. Some of these keywords, due to the nature of what people are searching for in Germany and France are English words. We used to rank high organically for some of these english terms, but recently our .com site seems to have replaced our language sites for these English terms.

Has anyone experienced something similar? My inital thought is that Google is giving higher importance to the English terms for the .com site and for the german language keywords for example it will give preference to the .de site?
