Canonical tags pointing to unlinked URLs

A site I am now overseeing has multiple ways to reach the same piece of content - each path creating a unique URL for the piece of content. All pages have canonical tags that point to a URL that is not linked anywhere on the site. Google appears to be indexing and sending (very few) visits to the canonical URLs.

My question is: Is my site getting hurt by the tags not pointing to URLs that are linked from my site? If you have observed a situation like this, do you think Google does a good job aggregating the PageRank to the canonical URL, even though it's not in the browse path?

I've been lurking on this forum for years and I appreciate all your opinions and observations!
