Folder Site Structure Vs. Flat Site Structure

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have thoughts or links to best practices on when to use a folder site structure vs. a flat site structure?

www.mysite.com/folder-1/page.html vs. www.mysite.com/page.html

Is there one preferred over the other, or is one version better than the other from a UX perspective? I feel the choice is based on how large the site is and the amount of content the site has. But if you have a site that has a little over 100 pages, is a folder structure necessary? Any documentation or thoughts you have on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
