Internal linking and navigation?

Hi all, hope I've posted this in the right area, please feel free to move it though.

I was just after some thoughts and advice on the current best practices on a sites navigational structure and the amount of internal links to display on one single page. Is there still a reccomended amount of internal links to keep under and should the same link be repeated more than once or will only the first instance be counted assuming they are all dofollow? If only the first instance is counted, will this dilute the link juice to other pages by using unnecessary duplicate links?
