I see design blog popping out every day, every other day a new css gallery comes out, there are hundreds of communities for designers.
Most of the author of these blogs/magazines are freelance designer with no SEO on their site, some doesn't even no seo, they don't use keywords to link back there site, they don't create content focused on keywords, some of them has tiniest site in terms of content just portfolio.
Do designers not need SEO anymore for their business? Does plain good content overpowers seo?

When you can qualify these guys as 'highly paid professionals who are turning away trade' then I will be interested in the techniques they are using to get there. Just because someone isn't doing any SEO on their site doesn't mean they are successful.

my guess is they are using Social Media to rank on Search Engines. there active involvement in design related blogs/magzines, forums, communities. and there frequent update of new design related blog posts ranks them on search engines, even though they are not using any seo per say e.g. keywords on anchor text for inbound links or on page keywords.
so my question is:
Do search engines ranks sites who are actively involved in social media even though they are not doing seo by book?
