Facebook Page Before Site is Live?

I have a potential client that will be building a website in the near future, possibly six months down the road. He asked me to start the marketing process by using a Facebook Page, using that to promote the business. I have used Facebook to promote company websites but I have never used it as the sole form of promoting a company. It seems to me that there is missing a spoke in the wheel without a website.

What do you think about starting a Facebook Page for a company without a website?

Not something I would do - but nothing inherently wrong either. Depends entirely on what the client wants to achieve, I suppose.

Developing "buzz" is okay. Just beware of stating "visit website" when there isn't one!

Might chat with client as to whether they want to give potential competitors a heads up where they are headed. After all the MFA and Scraper sites can get in line first... all they need is the idea.

Thanks for the replies. I don't feel comfortable with the concept either.

I will recommend to the customer that if we should build the Facebook page before the site is up, we should only create it to build anticipation for the launch of the site and/or product.
