Are the old SEO tactics back?
I have seen sites employing old tactics and getting high rankings

It's just weird that I have been seeing some sites that have no regards to keyword stuffing getting top rankings.

This specific site does the same for all brands they sell and they rank #1 or #2 for all those brand names.

- We learned through the years in SEO that everytime we repeat a keyword on the title, we are dilluting the power of that keyword.

Well, this site has titles like this:

TITLE TAG
Blue Widget, Green Widget, Yellow Widget, Black Widget

They rank #1 for widget

Their metas are in the same styles, and don't follow any of the current rules of thumb such as don't repeat keyword more than 3 times on meta keywords, keep meta descriptions short, etc...

Here is their

META KEYWORDS
Brand, Brand, Brand Clothing, Brand Clothes, Brand Apparel, Brand Womens, Brand Girl, Brand Kids, Brand Swim Wear, Brand Swimwear, Brand Bathingsuit, Brand Swimsuit, Brand Bikini, Brand Luggage, Brand Roller Duffle, Brand Duffle, Brand Duffel, Brand Suitcase, Brand Roller Suitcase, Brand Sneakers, Brand Crops, Brand Capris, Brand Sandals, Brand Bags, Brand Watches, Brand Sunglasses, Brand Boots, Brand Slippers, Brand Shoes, Brand Footwear, Brand Backpacks, Brand Messenger Bags, Brand Flip Flops, Brand Panties, Brand Underwear, Brand Jewelry Box, Brand Long Sleeve Tees, Brand Wallets, Brand Handbags, Brand Boardshorts, Brand Jeans, Brand Sweatshirts, Brand Shirts, Brand Tees, Brand T-Shirts, Brand Tank, Brand Cami, Brand Tunic, Brand Tops, Brand Tube Tops, Brand Jackets, Brand Bedding, Brand Pillow, Brand Comforter, Brand Sheets, Brand Lamp, Brand Rug, Brand Floormat, Brand Room, Brand Dresses, Brand Scarves, Brand Beanies, Brand Hats, Brand Accessories

Many of those are not in the content of the page.

META DESCRIPTION
All The Latest Brand Clothing, Brand Clothes, Brand Womens, Brand Girl, Brand Swim Wear, Brand Bathing Suit, Brand Swim Suit, Brand Bikini, Brand Luggage, Brand Sandals, Brand Bags, Brand Watches, Brand Flip Flops, Brand Wallets, Brand Handbags, Brand Boardshorts, Brand Jeans, Brand Sweatshirts, Brand Shirts, Brand Tops, Brand Tubes, Brand Dresses At #*$!XX

What I am trying to say is that they are pretty much doing SEO like we all used to do 5 years ago and it seems to be working.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Have you looked at their backlink profile? Do they have tons of links with that anchor text?

They actually have very few back links, less than 100.

Haha, well I've just started...

... started listening to what webmasters have to say...

I have no idea, but I'm guessing that that site is Google's best friend. :)

One liner from the masters please...

I have seen this on a number of occasions. But I have also seen it go horribly wrong for people that employ these tactics. Example – google penalising 50 places, they used to rank first for their keywords, which was a competitive phrase. However, they were number 1 or 2 for 3 years before this happened.
But, for people that are ranking well by these methods, the question is ‘Why change?’ . How can a SEO person convince a site like this to change, after all why fix what is not broken.

Things is that I am involved on a SEO effort to outrank this site. But it's tough since they are getting higher ranks by doing things that I say "don't work anymore".

New site or established? If new just wait a bit and they will get clobbered. If established... well might have to rethink your own efforts. For my own site I found that deleting all meta statements actually improved my rankings. Go figure!

Stablish site. Direct competitor. We have more inbound links. I keep getting asked "why the other ranks higher?" "let's so the same", and I have to explain what worked then doesn't work now. OR DOES IT?
I mean that's the whole thing I am trying to umderstand.

skuba... it's a crap shoot. Pick a few pages and pile it on and see what happens. Pick a few pages and do as I did, delete the meta. See what kind of results you get. Freely admit it is squirrely.

I tend to think they haven't be caught yet...but when they do BOOM! And if you've gone that route BOOM you, too. SEO is not science... it is more like alchemy!

skuba,

Is this site serving genuine/relevant content about the widget? Would you buy that product/service after reaching this site?

Probably answers to these questions might answer why they rank well from so long.

Title tag is OK...there are loads of sites with titles like this. Meta keywords is almost useless so people can put whatever they like in there. Meta description looks spammy but lists of keywords can be in there without penalty.

I am guessing that they have good anchor text from their inbound links.

Stablish site. Direct competitor. We have more inbound links.

It's not the number of backlinks that will really help you, it's the quality of those links. Research who is linking to them and why. Try to get those same sites to link to you if they are quality sites. Building quality inbound links is the most reliable way to outrank a competitor. Building links takes time and the link juice takes time to pass down to yoru site. This will not happen over night.
