Career Advice - Help!

I am mostly a reader, and sometimes post.

I have been running a small e-commerce business for the past two years - I run the gamut on responsibilites..from web design, maintenance, SEM, email, customer service, order fufill etc...

I have been looking to get into SEM as a career. I will have a number of opportunities opening up that have various responsibilities.
One in which I run all facets of multiple campaigns of a small botique firm(PPC, SEO, etc.) , some interactive agencies where I will be exposed to big brands, and some which just focus on SEO or PPC exclusively. Everything I know now is self taught (I know this is a relatively new industry). My questions are: what matters most when you are starting your career? (I am a recent college grad 3 years out) - should have I exposure to as much as possible? Is learning from industry experts the best route? Is agency experience the best route? Can you survive in this industry being self taught?

Any insight would help. thanks!
